Short Stories

In ELA we have started a new unit called short stories. In this unit we are reading and discussing short stories. We have read two so far, one which you may have heard of, The Hockey Sweater, and another called The Lady In The Cave. For each story we made a prediction about what we thought the story was about. Then we looked at the pictures and we discussed what we saw and asked questions about the pictures. We do writing assignments to test comprehension.
-Carlee

The Hockey Sweater

Did you know that the story "The Hockey Sweater" is so famous that part of it used to be on the Canadian 5 dollar bill?  It was originally wrote in French by Roch Carrier, but was translated into English too.  The story is about a young boy who is a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens, but receives a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater and isn't treated fairly because of it.

Oreos!

How were Oreos created?  Well in 1898 several baking companies merged to form the National Biscuit Company.  In 1912 they had the idea to make a cookie with 2 sides to it, with icing in the middle.  So how did the Oreo get it's name you ask?  Well we don't know for sure.  Some people say it's because the first Oreo box was gold and the French word for gold is or.  Others believe it's because they took the r-e from cream and stuck it in the middle of the two o's in chocolate.  Regardless of how it got it's name,  Oreos are popular all over the world.
