Erasers

1. Pencil manufacturers make erasers too, which has become familiar, however that wasn't always the case...
2. The pencil with an eraser on the end is an American phenomenon. The first patent for a pencil with an eraser on the end was in 1858 to a man by the name of Hyman Lipman of Philidelphia. Even to this day pencils sold in Europe are eraser-less.
3. An eraser with a different name? Originally, what we now call an eraser was called a "rubber" because the tree resin it was made of "rubbed-out" pencil marks. In Great Britain they still use the original name!
